Getting Ready for Prep: Why We Chose Headstart Club’s Preparation Class

If you’ve got a little one starting Prep next year, you’ll know the feeling, that quiet worry about whether they’re actually ready for it. Not just for the alphabet and counting, but for the bigger stuff: being dropped off somewhere new, following instructions from someone who isn’t you, making friends without you there to smooth the way.

That’s exactly where we were a few months ago. So we enrolled our son in Headstart Club’s Preparation Class, and I want to share how that term actually went, because it wasn’t the straightforward, easy-win story I expected when we signed up.

Why we said yes

Our son starts Prep next year, and I didn’t just want him excited about the idea of “big school” I wanted him properly ready for it. Preparation Club is exactly that: building confidence, independence and following instructions, alongside early letters, sounds and numbers, all through play rather than pressure. School-ready, not school-like.

It’s personal for me too. I struggled through school myself. I had a maths tutor from Grade 4 right through to Year 10 and I wanted my son to have every tool to make learning feel easier and more exciting than it ever did for me.

Why it mattered so much to us

We’re a busy family, like most. Between work and everything else going on, I knew there was no way we had the time or the headspace to build all of that ourselves at home, consistently, week after week. Handing that over to people who do it properly, every single day, felt like giving him something we simply couldn’t give him on our own right now. That’s not a failure on our part, it’s just honest about what a season of life with a lot going on actually looks like.

The bit I won’t sugarcoat

The drop-offs were hard. Not every week, but enough of them that I’d be lying if I said this was easy from day one. There were mornings he was nervous, and mornings that genuinely tugged at me long after I’d driven off. If you’ve got a kid who takes a bit longer to warm up to new things, I don’t need to explain that feeling to you, you already know it.

What stayed the same, every single week

Here’s the thing that carried us through the harder mornings: no matter how a drop-off went, he came out of every single class more eager to learn than he went in. That was the one constant all term, the nerves came and went, but his excitement to go back never really did.

The friends he’s made

Somewhere in amongst the letters and numbers, he’s found his people, a couple of little mates he now asks about during the week, not just on class days. That part snuck up on me. I was so focused on the “getting ready for Prep” side of things that I hadn’t expected the friendships to matter just as much.

What to do with the other one for two hours

Practical bit, because I know I’m not the only one who wondered about this: Noosaville is about a 25-minute drive up the Sunshine Coast motorway for us, and the classes run for two hours. Early on I had no idea what I’d actually do with my two-and-a-half-year-old in that window. Turns out, there’s plenty. Sanctuary at Acres Cafe has a lovely little kids’ area if you just want a coffee and a sit-down. Noosa Lions Park is right there too, a swim in the Noosa River, or a play at Pirate Park if swimming’s not on the cards. And if your toddler needs to burn off some proper energy, the Sundial Pump Track at Tewantin is worth the trip.

We’re going back

We’ve already re-enrolled him for Term 4. That’s the real answer to whether it was worth the harder mornings, we’re doing it all again, on purpose, because what he’s gained has been worth every bit of it.

If your own little one, anywhere from three and a half to five, could use a head start before Prep, Headstart Club’s Preparation Class has enrolments open for Term 4, and their 2027 waitlist is open now too.
